Ryan Mulhearn, CPA: Senior Accounting, Reporting & FP&A Consultant (Triangle)  

New entrant to Vaco’s consulting team, though a known commodity. CPA with 30+ years of experience supporting publicly traded companies, including a global multi-national life sciences firm and major financial institutions. Prior to joining Vaco, Ryan held key roles at IQVIA in Master Data Management and Corporate FP&A. In Master Data Management, he led a global team of seven associates, enhancing system processes and reducing response times, while also playing a pivotal role in expanding vendor and customer sanctioned party screening in response to Russian sanctions. In Corporate FP&A, he prepared monthly executive-level reporting, developed chart of account hierarchies to support a new general ledger implementation and served as a subject matter expert in the global rollout of planning, forecasting, and HFM consolidation applications.

At First Citizens Bank, Ryan led the acquisition accounting for an $8.5 billion financial institution, working with valuation specialists, calculating goodwill, forecasting capital ratios, and implementing an improved allowance for loan loss model. As Chief Accounting Officer at Hancock Bank, he led all accounting and reporting functions, overseeing a team of 35 associates. He directed financial reporting for two S-3 stock offerings ($200 million and $175 million) and a $1.4 billion S-4 registration. Ryan began his career in public accounting, spending about 10+ years focused on SEC-registered regional and community banks, including large, accelerated filers.

Anthony Maglio: Senior Accounting Consultant (Triangle)    

Experienced Vaco Consultant, completing project with a global pharmaceutical manufacturer, managing and improving Accounts Payable (AP) processes for a team of 20+ in Manila. He played a key role in resolving issues related to the company’s SAP implementation, reducing the invoice backlog from over 14,000 to under 5,000. On his second Vaco engagement, he supported a publicly traded life sciences client with interim accounting manager duties, handling accruals, fixed assets, reconciliations, and working with IT on capitalizable expenses. His first Vaco project involved supporting a private equity-backed disaster recovery firm, focusing on account reconciliation and audit preparation.

Previously, as Assistant Controller at Loparex, he led SAP implementation and managed the month-end close for a $600M manufacturing company. He also served as Controller at a large public company, improving month-end processes and overseeing SAP’s FICO module. At Apex Tool Group, Anthony managed global fixed asset accounting, led asset revaluations, and supported acquisitions. He has strong costing and project accounting experience, is an SAP super user, and has participated in Six Sigma process improvements.

Matt Anderson: Senior FP&A & Financial Modeling Consultant (Triangle) 

Experienced Vaco Consultant who recently wrapped up a three-year engagement with a Fortune 500 financial services firm, where he developed an internal financial system, validated data across platforms, managed enrichment metrics, and ensured accurate database mapping. He built and monitored data quality checks and used SQL to streamline validations when Google Sheets reached capacity. He’s currently supporting two fractional projects: one with an investment firm, where he maintains and automates an Excel model that converts Concur travel expenses into QuickBooks journal entries, including reconciliation tools; and another with a VC-backed SaaS company, where he reviews monthly financial projections in Mosaic, comparing them to prior forecasts and assumptions, and built an Excel summary to highlight discrepancies.

Previously, supported data room requests and sell-side due diligence for a venture capital backed client. Matt is currently supporting an international, multi-resource project in project management and financial analysis at a global financial services organization. Extensive experience in financial planning and analysis, including monthly variance analysis, annual budget preparation, quarterly reforecasting, monthly labor forecasting, and financial modeling.

Ty Smith, MBA, SHRM-CP: Senior People Operations Consultant (Triangle) 

Experienced Vaco consultant; recently completing project with private equity backed manufacturing company, initially handling payroll before covering a field HR manager's maternity leave. Ty then assisted with Paylocity implementation, recruited for corporate and field roles, led investigations, benefits administration, onboarding, and employee relations. Ty streamlined HR policies from 17 handbooks to one and proposed harmonizing pay schedules. Previously, Ty supported a publicly traded clean-energy company during high growth, serving as their talent acquisition partner, establishing recruiting processes, training hiring managers, building an internship program, and leading the Rippling implementation.

Ty also assisted an international biotech company with two rounds of layoffs, writing scripts and FAQs, building schedules, coordinating live presentations, and managing the transition from virtual to onsite. Additionally, Ty supported a Vaco client with talent acquisition and payroll processing for approximately 70 employees, including approving, auditing, and correcting timecards, processing various types of pay, and analyzing payroll reports for discrepancies. Erin Bednarek: Data Consultant (Triangle)   

Erin is an experienced data professional available who just joined our team of professional consultants.  She specializes in data analysis, data modeling, machine learning, data visualization, mathematics, and documentation.  Holding both a Master of Science in Applied Mathematics and a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics (Magna Cum Laude) from North Carolina State University, Erin has developed expertise in Python, Tableau, SQL, MATLAB, Jira, Power BI, and Azure. Prior to joining Vaco, Erin led R&D efforts enhancing predictive capabilities for the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Army through predictive dynamical system models.

She excels in creating Tableau dashboards for internal and field data, performing statistical analysis, and interpreting mathematical model outputs. Her work includes exploratory data analysis in Python, utilizing Pandas with Azure Databases and SQL to analyze laboratory and field data. Beyond her technical acumen, Erin has served as an Agile Project Manager, overseeing project workflows via Jira and Confluence, managing sprint planning and documentation for researchers and engineers. With a strong ability to produce comprehensive documentation tailored to both technical and non-technical audiences, Erin’s contributions have been instrumental in developing internal materials and securing large-scale contracts.

Regina Laessle: Senior Accounting Consultant – Construction Focus (Triangle)  

Regina is an incoming member of Vaco’s team of professional consultants, highly referred by one of our team members. She is an experienced accounting professional with a strong background in multiple industries, including construction and renewables, and has supported global organizations. Most recently, Regina worked with FHI 360, managing day-to-day accounting operations, overseeing general ledger preparation, operational accounting, and supporting budgeting and forecasting activities across country offices. She led year-end closing, field audits, and government expense analysis, ensuring compliance and timely financial reporting. At Cypress Creek Renewables, Regina led all financial activities, focusing on cash forecasting, revenue recognition, cost accounting, and financial reporting.

She partnered with the EVP of business units and the project finance group to track project progress and manage vendor payment terms to improve cash flow. Regina also prepared a weekly rolling cash forecast and managed AR, AP, and purchase orders. Previously, at Lend Lease, Regina worked as a Finance Manager, overseeing project creation, maintenance, and profit recognition for the Americas region's insurance program. She also managed P&L consolidation for operations across several cities and was responsible for implementing project costing, project controls, and MIS systems to ensure streamlined financial management. Regina initially joined Lend Lease as a project accountant during her first tenure.

Khalid Mustafa: Senior Business Intelligence & Sales Operations Consultant (Triangle)   

Experienced Vaco Consultant who recently completed a project with a private equity-backed clinical research company. Khalid updated IT cost forecasts using PowerApps and Power BI, covering OPEX and CAPEX for resources, projects, and staff FTE. Khalid aggregated inputs from IT leaders, developed new reporting tools for leadership, and ensured data accuracy and standardization. Khalid also improved the process for cost center owners to input data directly and created detailed PowerPoint guides for using Power Apps and Power BI.

Tosha Bailey: Senior Global Payroll Consultant (Triangle)   

Experienced Vaco Consultant; Recently stepped in for the payroll manager at a global SaaS company. Oversaw payroll processing for ~500 employees globally. Also provided standardization and documentation following an ADP implementation. Previously supported a life science company, providing high-level analysis of payroll and HR processes as the company implemented a new HRIS. Also tasked with assessing payroll team members’ knowledge and breadth of experience and advised on alignment with company’s needs. Wren Mitchell, CPA: Senior FP&A & People Operations Consultant (Triangle)    

Experienced Vaco consultant, completing interim finance director project for business unit of private equity backed SaaS client. Skilled in financial reporting, analysis, forecasting, building KPIs and dashboards, and human resources. Wren streamlined the Gross Revenue Analysis process by developing tools to address aged accounts receivable and create efficient workflows for non-policy revenue deliverables. She built forecasting models to support financial reporting, improved data reporting through Business Intelligence, and explored enhancements with the upcoming NetSuite implementation. Additionally, she is supporting a venture capital-backed software firm in bringing HR practices in-house from a PEO.

Ed Miles, CPA: Senior Accounting & Financial Reporting Consultant (Triangle)    

Experienced Vaco consultant, completing engagement for multi-location regional bank, where he managed the month-end close process, prepared a three-year operating budget, processed payroll, and was entrenched in asset & liability (ALM) management. Previously served as Interim Controller for publicly traded clean energy company, leading the close, performing technical research, and mentoring the staff until a new Controller was identified. Sharmila Shrestha, CPA: Senior Accounting Consultant (Triangle)    

Experienced Vaco Consultant; immediately available for full-time support, after winding down a year-and-a-half project supporting a private equity manufacturer with reconciling global intercompany across 50 affiliates for FY 22 and FY 23, standardizing chart of accounts, assisting in the OneStream implementation, and standardizing the intercompany loan process. She also has supported the same publicly traded biotech with quarterly SEC reporting, proxy statement filing, 8-K filings, and preparing tie-out binders for the auditors. Prior to joining Vaco, she provided outsourced accounting services for emerging growth companies, where she was responsible for ASC 606-revenue recognition, ASC 842-leases, inventory management, month-end close, and financial reporting in a variety of industries including waste management, construction, non-profit, and clean energy.
